Frequent Texting or lifting baby can get you 'Mummy's thumb' or Mom’s wrist!!!!

Do you often feel wrist pain while lifting your baby...??...are you are experiencing numbness & tingling over thumb and wrist while using laptop, mobile and tablets???.....These are the warning signs of  a modern malady caused by physical stresses of parenthood and overuse of new technology....a condition called –Dequervain’s tenosynovitis or more commonly known as “Mummy’s thumb”or “Mom’s wrist”.

Chronic stress on the wrist from lifting a baby can cause inflammation of the tendons. The pain is often exacerbated by overuse of electronic devices that have touch pads.

'Mummy's thumb' known by its medical name, de Quervain's tenosynovitis is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.

People suffering de Quervain's tenosynovitis, will probably feel pain every time they turn their wrist, grasp anything or make a fist.

Although the exact cause is not known, any activity that relies on repetitive hand or wrist movement - such as working in the garden, playing golf or racket sports or lifting your baby - can make it worse.

Symptoms of de Quervain's tenosynovitis include:

  • Pain near the base of your thumb

  • Swelling near the base of your thumb

  • Difficulty moving your thumb and wrist when you're doing activities that involve grasping or pinching

  • A 'sticking' or 'stop-and-go' sensation in your thumb when trying to move it

Pinching, grasping and other movements of the thumb and wrist aggravate the pain.

Chronic overuse of the wrist is commonly associated with the condition.

People between the ages of 30 and 50 have a higher risk of developing de Quervain's tenosynovitis.

The condition is more common in women than in men, and it may be associated with pregnancy. Baby care, which involves using your thumbs as leverage to lift your child hundreds of times a day, may also be associated with the condition.

You may think this is a new generation disease as the name suggests....But no!!!!! This is a disease due to sedentary lifestyle....because we didn’t see this condition in the older generation women as they make their own bread, hand wash the clothes and perform their grueling daily chores.......

Now the world has changed kitchens are equipped with washing machines,Mixer grinders,Bread makers and women are suffering!!

Women being 'weaker than they used to be' is to blame for a growing number of new mothers experiencing an injury known as 'mummy thumb'.

Experts say the fact that today’s mothers are older and baby weights are rising may contribute to an increase in cases.

A 2009 study of more than 11,000 military personnel who suffered from De Quervain’s showed a three times higher risk among women, especially those over 40.

“The De Quervain’s tendons run up the side right toward the base of the thumb and cross over,” she said. “They can be overused, even with a little stress. Texting is the worst. You are constantly using those tendons and they are not invincible.”

“Heavy lifting anything with the thumbs and fingers pushing together — basically using the thumb to stabilize — can cause this,” said Joy. “Constantly texting and holding a baby, nursing and undoing baby bottles, all those things.”

Dont worry!!! A Physical therapist can help you....:-)

Early understanding of the disease can give you good recovery...so instead of researching online seek medical attention at the earliest..

women can take action before they fall pregnant, to build their strength and be mindful of the task ahead.

new mothers can help reduce the risk of suffering mummy’s thumb by regularly using aids, including feeding pillows to bring the baby closer, without lifting.

The most common therapeutic interventions includes,

·        Acute therapies can involve ice application for 15 minutes every 6 hours or NSAIDS.

·        Rest

·        Modalities

·        Thumb spica splint or buddy taping thumb to index finger for resting APL and EPB tendon.

·        Analgesics

·        Steroid injection

In severe cases, surgery may be necessary, . Recognizing the problem early is key.
